Recently we read a write-up by one of the members of Brighton band White Canvas that boldly and unapologetically stated that Brighton has the worst music scene in the UK, even going so far as to suggest that it’s the bands themselves that have ruined the town. The author stated that most of these “flaky bands” have zero desire to get famous and are quite content to just play within the bubble of their own town, a place that according to him only has three good venues.
We could rip that article to pieces. We could point out that White Canvas are nothing more than the sort of forgettable band that one might briefly pay attention to on a night out, before deciding that sticking their headphones in is a better idea.
But then, that’s already been done, so what’s the point?
Instead we’re going to celebrate the bands and artists that we think are done a disservice by idiots like that. Over the next few weeks this and the articles that follow it will showcase some of the greats that we have encountered and shot videos with, some of which were shot quite a while ago. Some of these acts may not even be together anymore, some of the artists might have left music behind, but while they were around they gave us a reason to remember them. Not all of them live within Brighton itself, some are from smaller towns across the twin counties of East and West Sussex, but most play in the city on a regular basis.
Fuck White Canvas, no one is going to remember them.
